Logic Analyzer comparison

Post by octal » Mon Mar 31, 2008 12:01 pm

Hi,
again with my hardware questions ... http://www.sfcompiler.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=346

I'm going to buy a logic analyze and wanted to know your opinion and (most important) your experience (if any) with these two analyzers:

DigiView DV1-100
http://www.tech-tools.com/dv_dv1.htm

and

LogicPort
http://www.pctestinstruments.com/index.htm

They are about the same price, I personnaly prefer LogicPort but some persons says on the web that it lacks memory ... so you can't do long acquisitions.

What do you think ?

what about the PicoScope sold by CircuitED (xor :o ) http://www.circuit-ed.com/PoScope-Basic ... P97C5.aspx
I did does a quick check but did not found anywhere the technical specifications (max frequecies, ... max sampling rates, ...)

Ahmed,

The PoScope is not a fast oscilloscope/sampler by any means. It's specs are for 100KHz-200KHz maximum. It's advantage is found in its logic analysis of some common protocols. It also has a nice spectrum analyzer at audio frequencies.

For the price and depending on your requirements it could be a good deal. I can put you in touch with someone who uses it regularly and is a good tech if you would like to ask some more specific questions on its pros/cons for your needs.

His alias is "COPYN'PASTE" in the Proton and mE forums.

Thanks xor,
I have found the pdf manual of the PicoScope that gives all specifications. In fact, it's a very nice measure instrument, but for my needs it will not be usable. For future neeads, I'll have to analyze signals at least 10 to 15MHz ... this will be too high. I think that I'll go for a LogicPort, altought the Digiview seems very well also. I'll try to load their respective softwares and try to see about signals interpreters, and other stuf (like trigger conditions costumization)....

Thanks again xor.

Best regards

If it's just a logic analyser and not a full oscilloscope you need, have a look here:

This may come as ancient history now, as it's posted months after the original question, but I have a LogicPort analyzer and find it a great instrument with extremely useful software. I recommend it highly for data analysis.

I've used it with a Texas Instrument DSP board, also for debugging GPIB commands as well as with 18F PICs.

For real oscilloscope work, I use either a Tektronix TDS430 400 MHz digital oscilloscope or a 2246 100 MHz analog scope.

Just a sidenote, anyone using a PICkit2 it now has a built in 3 channel logic analyzer. Nothing fancy but it's free and actually very handy.
