Microchip's Masters 2008

Post by dmtulsa » Thu Jun 26, 2008 1:38 pm

I got lucky and my company is sending me to the Microchips masters conference in July. https://secure.microchip.com/usmasters2008/general.aspx

I thought I'd compile a list of questions anyone here may have that I could ask the "Experts" while I'm there, Then post the answers when its over.

Please ask real questions and not things that with a little effort you can find in a data sheet or manual.

Any plans on embedding an RS485 transceiver peripheral?

RS485 is a tough requirement

It is worth asking about RS485 but RS485 and RS232 are difficult features for integration onto the same semiconductor die as the micro and memory. The micro and memory are fabricated on a process optimized for low power operation where you can pack in bunch of flash, eeprom, digital logic, and some analog...

The RS485 and RS232 specifications require that devices connected to such networks be able to tolerate +/-27V spikes. This requires an expensive high-voltage process that doesn't play very well with the rest of the features. While technically possible add RS485 will make the single chip solution probably more expensive than a micro+RS485 two chip solution.

One more week to ask questions. Next week I'll post a list of what I've received here and other places.
