No I dont think it's compatible at all.
MPLabX is still in beta state, and even Microchip Simulator does not work yet on it for most chips. PICKit2 is not even supported, and ICD2 is supported only for some chips.
ICD3 is supported for most chips but is not stable.

PS. MPLabX is not MPLab, it's the new version of MPLab fully rewritten in Java to be multiplatform (based on Netbeans platform). more details here http://devupdates.microchip.com/mplab/

The original question probably should have been:

"IF MPLABX worked, could you use it with Swordfish for Debugging?"

That said, I think you can still import a COF file into MPLABX and use it... it'll just work as poorly as MPLABX does currently (no simulator, no pickit2, sketchy ICD2/ICD3 operation, etc)

I wish I could get 8.56 working. No chance according to Microchip since they have no idea on how to support their software.

Do you mean you can't run MPLAB 8.56 or can't run SF in this version of MPLAB?

I do run SF in 8.56 without any problems... But you must mean on another OS then windows. The only way i was able to run MPLAB on my Mac was using virtualization software. (Parallels and Fusion)
