Your first impressions about the new PIC32 cores
Hi,
I just wanted to know your opinion and first impressions about PIC32 cores !
Do you think it's better to stick with Microchip for 32 bit cores or to switch to ARM cores ?
Regards
octal

A better question :
Do you think it's better to stick with Microchip cores or to switch to ARM cores ?

Be sure, this list, in time, will be bigger and bigger ...

Yes floran I agree that there were so many silicon errata for PIC series,
but PIC32 core is NOT a Microchip core. It has nothing to do with old microchip architecture. It only reuse Pic24 16 bits peripherals, the core is a MIPS core. So we can not rely on the existance or on the longness of the Erata list to dismiss Microchip PIC32.
And from another point of view, if other manufacturer do not explicitely publish so detailed errata datasheets, that does not mean that their silicon is clean (Atmel is an example).

Keep in mind that microchip did not just drop support for old product lines and discontinue lines like amtel did/does...
Just take a look at the range of products mc offer in comparison, and how old some of the "still produced and supported" product lines are, eg 16F84.
I'd rather a silicon revision and an Errata compared to a complete chip change and sudden production stop

I think the MIPS M4K Core is an excellent idea, but I wasn't very impressed with the C32 C compiler or the PIC32 Starter Kit . And the cost for the full version PIC32 C compiler is crazy when compared to the free tool-chains the competition offers for 32-bit variants.
The core leaves it open for a lot of 3rd party tools to come about, but they have to be interested first, and IMHO that may take a while.
I have a brand new PIC32 starter kit for $10.00 < retail if anyone might be interested.

No. This is not the PIM module for the Explorer 16 board. It's the PIC32
Starter Kit just like shown here http://www.microchip.com/stellent/idcpl ... odeId=2603 for $49.99.
